Venetian Ode
In foggy weather the white
copper‑topped churches
loom like mainsails
suddenly out of gray mist
and gray‑green water.
Lovliest of all is la Salute.
In high summer
at the end of day
there is marble in motion along the canals.
Above and below the footbridges buckle....
